Dr Henrietta Hughes awarded OBE in New Year Honours List

An Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal has been awarded to the National Guardian for the NHS, Dr Henrietta Hughes FRCGP MA (Oxon) MBBS DRCOG DFFP, in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2020.

The award recognises Henrietta’s services to the NHS, including her current roles at the National Guardian’s Office and Brunswick Medical Centre.

Henrietta has held the post of National Guardian since October 2016. Over the three years since she was appointed, Henrietta’s office has provided leadership and support to a growing number of Freedom to Speak Up Guardians across England.

There are now over 500 fully trained guardians in NHS and Independent sector organisations, national bodies and elsewhere that ensure workers can speak up about any issues impacting on their ability to do their job. The National Guardian’s Office also provides challenge and learning to the healthcare system as a whole as part of its remit.

Previously Henrietta was a Medical Director at NHS England, and she continues to perform a clinical role weekly as a GP in central London. Henrietta was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners earlier this year.

Henrietta said, “I am very honoured to receive this award and humbled by the recognition. I’ve been extremely privileged to work with some wonderful people during my career and feel this honour is something that reflects on each and every one of them too.

“Not least the courageous workers who have spoken up, the Freedom to Speak Up Guardians who have listened to their concerns and the leaders in organisations who have supported speaking up.

“While we have now seen tens of thousands of individual cases of speaking up in the NHS, we are really still just starting out and this honour only heightens my sense of ambition to ensure speaking up becomes business as usual.”
